into the blue. is tiny yawn’s latest EP. the band is burgeoning from indie to popular view, yet with only a handful of EP under their belt. with no true album to display their identity, they’ve been developing under these smaller formats. but that shouldn’t be a reason to discount the band. into the blue. feels like a full and rich experience. leaning more into math rock this time around, tiny yawn explores more of what makes their sound so attractive and tries a bit of something new.
their vocalist Megumi Takahashi has been leaning into a performance reminiscent of Aimer (a major pop influence), by taking a more disengaged but emotional direction. it works for what they are doing as tiny yawn has leaned into music a bit more laid back. adding this bit of edge to the performance matches the band’s lean into math rock this time around. “nine lives” is the best offering in this new push. focusing more on delineating guitar chords and a moodier bass line, the song brings more attention to instrumentals rather than their more traditional pop/ rock history. but even “i try” sticks to their traditional formula, giving the EP a balanced feel between old and new. it became my personal favorite track from this new release. the patterned rhythm is alternated well with Takahashi’s shimmering vocals, the song feels like riding on one nice long wave.
tiny yawn has long been in the obscure branch of music, especially here in the west. yet the more i listen the more i find something new, something worth checking out, in each EP release. to my notice, the band has a dynamic and rich sound to their recordings. which is not something i would normally point out from mainstream releases, but find to be one of the best parts of their sound. it doesn’t feel like i’m listening to an indie band at all. a definite sign of maturity. by all accounts, if they prefer to release in EP format, then i’m happy it works for them. each compact release building a subsequent discography that feels quick to pivot and experiment. maybe don’t treat this EP as a small release, but a noteworthy one from the band. into the blue. is short lived, but worth the check in. especially if it leads to checking out their other impressive works.
