Marcus Landeros

i have been an avid listener of japanese music for nearly two decades. an interest initially discovered through anime like Yu-Yu Hakusho and Inuyasha (on late-night Toonami) and, much later at the age of 14, i really found my footing in the music sphere with the anime Bleach and its first credit song of “Life is Like a Boat” by Rie Fu. from that moment i was completely hooked.

after this came artists like “ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION,” “Aqua Timez,” “L’Arc-en-Ciel,” “Hikaru Utada,” “Suneohair,” “Home Made Kazoku,” “Perfume,” “Nujabes,” “Shiro Sagisu” and “Yoko Kanno” to name a very short few. i spent most of my teenage years held hostage by this fascination. my interest in the the music scene became pretty intense over the years. while my fandom is rooted in anime and japanese video games, ive long since grown beyond the formats and found new genres and styles further across the industry. ive founded a great love for hiphop through “Nujabes,” 80s city-pop through “Tatsuro Yamashita,” prog-rock through “School Food Punishment,” math-rock through “tricot,” bossa-nova through “ROUND TABLE” and, of course, fusion-jazz through “CASIOPEA.” among so, so many other examples…

all that to say, japan has a wonderful penchant for embracing, revitalizing and pushing genre boundaries beyond what, i think, most western audiences are accustomed to hearing. this has lead to a wonderful development in musical expression that i believe is not found in any other corner of the planet. so my love for the history and the present production of the country remains quite strong, even today.

now in my 30s, my taste in music and my passion for what i listen to has simply grown to unmanageable means. at this point ive found scarce few ways to engage with what i enjoy and what fuels a great portion of my daily life, if not my weeks and years. i wanted to make a website to help express all of those “unmanageable means.” a place where i hope others with similar backgrounds can come together. a place where those with burgeoning appreciations can discover. a place for love of the medium. a place to express myself which, i believe, will equally benefit others.

my name is Marcus Landeros, i am a huge anime nerd, a long time video game enthusiast, a thoughtful person and a passionate human being. i hope what i carry will translate to others well and continue to grow for a long time to come. “The Sagasu Review” comes from who i am and who i have been for quite some time. if my poor grammar and poor prose do not enchant you, i hope my passion will.
